AUGUSTA, Ga. — Chilly air and swirling winds are creating a unique atmosphere on Moving Day at the 2022 Masters as the leaders prepare to get on the course at Augusta National in an attempt to position themselves for a green jacket on Sunday. Scottie Scheffler remains the 36-hole leader at 8 under, five shots clear of the rest of the top 10, which are just getting started with their third rounds.
Scheffler tied the low round of the week with a 67 on Friday to take control of the tournament. The No. 1 golfer in the world may put a tremendous bookend on what has been a fantastic three-month stretch that has propelled him into the spotlight. Justin Thomas started Round 3 the way he ended Round 2 — on fire — with two birdies through his first four holes to join the group at T2. Also still in the hunt is a number of major champions like Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama and others who are plenty capable of chasing down the big lead.
Will Scheffler finish it off from here and capture his first major championship with a green jacket? That’s the big question, and with so many stars lurking in the shadows, it makes for a compelling weekend of competition at one of the sport’s best and most prominent venues.

If you include this week, Scottie Scheffler has been beaten by just 58 of 888 competitors in his last seven major championships. Low-key terrific resume at the biggest events and perhaps a round and a half from having the goods to show for it.

Today’s scoring average is 74.4 so far, which is slightly easier than Friday’s round, but without the amateurs and former champions playing, you could argue that today’s round has been more difficult. Will be interesting to see where it nets out.

With a win this week, Shane Lowry would become just the 85th golfer in history to win multiple major championships but the first to win both Royal Portrush and Augusta National. He’s four back of Scheffler, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see those two in the final pairing on Sunday.

To Chip’s point below, Scheffler is currently top 10 in this field so far this week in strokes gained around the greens. He’s had two really good ones so far to day — one at the first to get up and down for par, and one at the second to get up and down for birdie.

Is Scheffler chipping his way to a green jacket?
Scottie Scheffler might be able to run away and hide if he posts anything under par here on moving day, and he’s already off to a good start in that department with a birdie on No. 2 to move to -9, maintaining the five-shot advantage that he carried into the day. Shane Lowry and Charl Schwartzel have moved to -4, but none of the Dustin Johnson-Justin Thomas-Cam Smith trio (three of the most likely contenders in the chase back) are better than DJ’s -3. One area where Scheffler has really given himself an advantage against the field this week has been around the greens, using his wedge game to avoid bogeys with brilliant par saves.
