Flight cancellations have damaged a great many individuals’ vacation travel plans. With the New Year around the corner and omicron actually seething, the public is anxious. Flying over special times of year can be upsetting. Flying during the surge of an exceptionally infectious virus brings its own special challenges. Omicron is the dominant variation, representing over 73% of all new instances of COVID-19 – and it is hitting the carrier business hard. In excess of 2,000 flights have been dropped since Christmas Eve. At last, she says that flexibility from travelers and airlines is essential.
“Several airlines — United Airlines, Delta Airlines, American, Alaska, Jet Blue — have all reported this rise of ommicron, which has resulted in cases across the country affecting their aircrews,” Josephs said. “And that means they don’t have enough pilots or flight attendants to operate certain flights.”
CNBC’s aviation reporter Leslie Josephs said cancellations will likely be a few more days, but things are going to get better in the new year.
She said the solution is not clear because the virus is unpredictable. But companies are trying to mitigate the problem.
dr. Anthony Fauci recently weighed in on whether to implement a vaccine mandate for domestic flights.
“The airlines are kind of throwing money at the problem and offering pilots double pay,” Josephs said. “In some cases flight attendants get paid double to thrice to pick up those open trips so they can be covered.”
“If you make vaccination compulsory, that is an extra incentive to have more people vaccinated. If you want to do that with domestic flights, I think that should be seriously considered,” Fauci said.
Josephs said such a move is unlikely to happen without pushing back airlines, who would be responsible for checking vaccination cards.
“This isn’t something you’re likely to suddenly hear about,” she said. “If they even did it, we would probably be notified several weeks in advance before that happened.”
